  • If it was not possible to recognize the people of Kufa before the painful tragedy of Karbala, their faces are well known in this event. The hypocrisy, disloyalty, hesitancy, lack of will and decision making power of the people of Kufa were such that at first they showed a lot of emotions and then in a short period of time they changed their face and completely changed.

In this topic, first of all, the invitation of the people of Kufa to Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) is discussed, and then its consequences, i.e. the arrival of Muslim bin Aqeel in Kufa and the landing of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) near Kufa (Karbala) and the role of the Kufas in the Karbala disaster. , and the captivity of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) in Kufa is discussed.

The invitation of the people of Kufa from Imam Hussain (peace be upon him).

Following the death of Muawiya in the middle of Rajab in the year 60 and the accession of Yazid to the caliphate, which was contrary to the peace treaty between Muawiya and Imam Hassan Mojtaba (peace be upon him), Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) terminated the peace treaty and considered Yazid’s caliphate to be illegal and illegal. Refusing to pledge allegiance to him, he started an uprising against him.

In this view, the Holy Prophet left Madinah and migrated to Mecca to reflect his goals of uprising in the Islamic world, where Muslims from all over the Islamic countries were moving towards this holy city to perform the Hajj.

The meeting of the leaders of Kufa in the house of Suleiman bin Sard Khazaei

When the news reached the people of Kufa that Imam Hussain, peace be upon him, did not swear allegiance to Yazid and went from Madinah to Mecca and stayed in that city, their leaders gathered in the house of Suleiman bin Dar Sard Khazai. When everyone gathered, Suleiman said: “You know that Mu’awiyah is dead and will soon be punished for his actions. Now his son Yazid is sitting in his place. Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) opposed him and went to Mecca out of fear of the tyrants of Abu Sufyan’s descendants. Now, if you are followers of him and his father and want to fight his enemy, write to him, and if you are not ready to fight, announce it.”

The audience said: “We will help him and we will fight with his enemies and we will sacrifice so much for him that he can seize the government.”

Suleiman took a pledge from them to be with him until the end, then he told them to write a collective letter to Imam and invite him to come to Kufa.

The first letter from the people of Kufa to Imam Hussein (peace be upon him).

This was the first letter from the people of Kufa, which was sealed by Sulaiman bin Sard Khaza’i, Musayb bin Najiba Fazari, Habib bin Mazher Asadi, Rafa’ bin Shaddad Bijli, Abdullah bin Wal Taymi and another group of Shia leaders.

These people had written: “Your enemy and your father’s enemy – the oppressor Muawiya is dead and his cursed son Yazid is sitting in his place. We are ready to die for you. The emir of Kufa is Noman bin Bashir, who lives alone in Dar al-Marah, and people do not come to his Friday prayers and congregation, and they do not pay tribute to him, and no one cares about him. If we know you are coming to Kufa, we will send him out to go to dinner. Maybe God will guide us to the truth with your coming.”

This letter was sent by the chiefs of Kufa to Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) in Makkah by Abdullah bin Saba Hamdani and Abdullah bin Musame Bakri. When he read the letter, he remained silent and did not answer those who brought it.

After them, Qays bin Mashar Siddawi, Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah Arahbi, Amara bin Ubaid Saluli and Abdullah bin Wal Taimi, who were among the famous people of Kufa, arrived at the service of the Imam, peace be upon him, with about one hundred and fifty people, and each of them, two, three, and four people carried letters. There were those in which Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) was asked to come to Kufa, but Imam did not answer them either.

The last letter from the people of Kufa

Then Hani bin Hani and Saeed bin Abdullah Hanafi came and brought a letter with this theme (which was the last letter from the people of Kufa) to Imam Hussain (peace be upon him):

In the name of God, the most gracious, the most merciful

To Hussain bin Ali Amir al-Mu’minin from his faithful and Muslim followers from the people of Kufa. But then, people are waiting for you and they don’t accept anyone other than you as their leader. So, son of the Prophet’s daughter, hurry up. Hasten that the gardens are green, and the fruits are ripe, and the ground is full of grass and the trees are leafy. If you want, rush to us, an armed army is ready to meet you.

This letter was sealed by Shabth bin Rabi, Hajjar bin Abjar, Yazid bin Harith, Yazid bin Rawim, Urwa bin Qais, Amro bin Hajjaj Zubaydi and Muhammad bin Umair bin Attard Tamimi.

Imam Hussain’s response to the letters of the Kufians and the dispatch of Muslim bin Aqeel (peace be upon him) to Kufa

It was after this letter that Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) got up and went to Masjid al-Haram, and after offering two rak’ahs of prayer between the pillar and the position, he came home and called for the envoys of the people of Kufa and said: “My grandfather saw the Prophet in a dream and he assigned me to do something.” . I am also looking for it and God has asked for my good in this way. Then he answered the letters of the people of Kufa as follows:

In the name of God, the most gracious, the most merciful

From Hussain bin Ali to the people of the believers, Salam Barshama, and then Hani bin Hani and Saeed bin Abdullah, who are your last messengers, brought your letters and I learned about their contents. I do not hesitate to come to you, but before coming, I sent my brother and cousin and the trusted man of my family, Muslim bin Aqeel bin Abi Talib, to you to inform me about your condition. If you are like what you wrote in your letters, pledge allegiance to Muslim on my behalf and help him and don’t leave him alone. I swear by my life that the imam must judge according to God’s book. May God guide us and you to the truth and let us all practice divine piety. Peace be upon you and God’s mercy and blessings.

Then he sealed the letter and gave it to Muslim and said that if you see that the people are ready to pledge allegiance to me, let me know as soon as possible so that I can act accordingly. Then he said goodbye to him and sent him away.1
