  • In an authentic narration from Ibn Ri’ab, it is narrated that Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: “When Fatimah (peace be upon her) was pregnant with al-Husayn (peace be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) told her: ‘Allah has granted you a child whose name is al-Husayn, and my Ummah (community) will kill him.’

Fatimah (peace be upon her) replied, ‘I have no need for this child.’

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said, ‘Allah has promised me that Imamate (leadership) will be in his progeny.’

Fatimah (peace be upon her) then said, ‘I am satisfied with that.'”

In a reliable hadith from Abu Basir, it is mentioned that this event took place after the birth of Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him), and it is not unlikely that the incident occurred both during the pregnancy and after the birth, because someone who is attached to something desires to hear about it repeatedly.

For example, when Prophet Zakariya (peace be upon him) prayed:

“My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.” (Surah Al-Imran, 3:38)

And when the angels gave him glad tidings of Yahya (John), he said:

“My Lord, how will I have a boy when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?” (Surah Al-Imran, 3:40)

Prophet Zakariya (peace be upon him) knew he was old and that his wife was barren, yet he still asked Allah for a child.

Similarly, when Fatimah (peace be upon her) was given the glad tidings that Imamate would continue in her progeny, she wanted to hear this news repeatedly to find reassurance.

In a trustworthy narration from Ibn Bukayr, it is reported that Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: “Fatimah (peace be upon her) once came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) while he was weeping, and tears were flowing from his blessed eyes.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said, ‘Jibril (Gabriel) informed me that al-Husayn (peace be upon him) will be killed.’

This news weighed heavily on Fatimah (peace be upon her) and she became distressed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) then gave her glad tidings about those from her progeny who would attain the Imamate, which brought her comfort and peace.”

From these narrations, it is evident the deep love the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and Fatimah (peace be upon her) had for Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him). Whenever they recalled what would later happen to al-Husayn (peace be upon him), they would become agitated and weep, but would find solace in the knowledge that Imamate would continue through his descendants.

This weeping and glad tidings were repeated many times.
