Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said the occupation of new parts of the buffer and border zone between Israel and Syria in the Golan was done to ensure security for Israelis.The Israeli army stated that since Syrian soldiers left their positions along the border in the Jabal al-Sheikh region, Israeli soldiers entered and stationed themselves there.The Israeli army explained that the action was to strengthen their defensive positions, fill the gap left by Syrian forces, and prevent jihadist (Islamist) forces from approaching the area.After the announcement of the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government, Syrian soldiers at the border with Israel changed their uniforms and left the border region. During the Six-Day War (1967), Israel occupied the Golan Heights and later annexed it to its official territory. The United Nations and all countries consider this area as occupied.
