  • Fatimah bint Asad, the mother of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), was one of the prominent women of the Banu Hashim clan and among the early Muslim women. She was born in Mecca as the daughter of Asad ibn Hashim and later married Abu Talib. Thus, she became the first woman to bear children who were Hashimites from both parents.

    Lineage and Life

Fatimah bint Asad was born into the Banu Hashim, one of the most distinguished branches of the Quraysh tribe. She married Abu Talib and together they raised their notable sons, including Imam Ali (peace be upon him), Ja’far al-Tayyar, and Aqil. This family held a prestigious position in Mecca and among the Quraysh.

    Children

Fatimah bint Asad was the mother of four sons: Talib, Aqil, Ja’far, and Ali (peace be upon him), along with several daughters, including Umm Hani (Fakhitah), Jumana, and Rayta. Imam Ali (peace be upon him), the fourth and most prominent of her children, played a crucial role in Islamic history.

    Virtues and Distinctions

Fatimah bint Asad was known for her exceptional love and care for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), to the extent that he considered her like his own mother. After Abu Talib’s death, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) shrouded Fatimah bint Asad in his own cloak and personally descended into her grave to offer her peace and security. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) held her in high regard for her motherly treatment of him.

    Her Faith and Migration

Fatimah bint Asad was among the first women to believe in the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and migrated with him to Medina. She was also the first woman to pledge allegiance to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) after the conquest of Mecca.

    Her Passing

Fatimah bint Asad passed away in Medina. Historians differ on the exact year of her death, but some sources indicate she died in the fourth year after the Hijra. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) personally buried her and prayed to God for her mercy.

Fatimah bint Asad is considered one of the greatest women in Islamic history, having played a significant role in raising and supporting both Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). Her faith and virtues hold a special place among Muslims.
